ALBANY — Republican lawmakers and a Democratic gubernatorial candidate argue that Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal to increase the stock of senior and affordable housing in New York could become what Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick referred to as the “death of the suburbs.”

The battle concerns what are known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs), which are typically thought of as extensions to a home. Under the proposed law, these units would be more like independent living spaces that could, for example, be rented from the homeowner.

During a news conference Tuesday in the Capitol, Fitzpatrick said that if ADUs are allowed across the state, it could lead to corporations buying up family homes and swelling the ranks of absentee landlords.
